03-15-2020 Santa Anita Full Card

We have 8 races today and a couple of stand-out singles including my L.A Times Value Play of the Day. This looks like a great day for rolling daily doubles.

Pick 5 single is in race 3 Brickyard Ride had a comically bad ride going 5 furlongs on turf in January. Into the far turn the horse in the lead by 3 lengths got spooked, hopped, almost lost the ridder, recovered then pushed back to the lead and then mid-stretch broke through the rail, rolled over and lost the jockey. It is a crazy race replay to watch. Rested for a month we see some very sharp workouts. They race the horse protected today. Top favorite of the day. I also have a value play for this race as well. In race 2 Ruby Bradley who won at this distance in January, came back slightly longer next out and ran 3rd at this level after briefly leading in the stretch. The horse was a voided claim that day but put in a nice workout March 1st. They collected a paycheck on a horse they were okay losing and now bring her back at the same level placed for the easy win. Top class, back speed, last race speed, last race pace. Red’s Sacred Appeal is the danger. Daily Double Ruby Bradley/Reds Scared Appeal over Brickyard Ride/Project Leader

Pick 4 single is race 8 Purdue – see below

L.A. Times Value Play of the Day

Race 8: Purdue with Edwin Maldonado riding tried to wire the field last out in the first race since July, getting caught deep stretch to run second. Today trainer Eddie Truman who is winning 30% at the meet with his small stable shortens the horse up a half furlong. Truman is also winning 30% beaten favorite. Second start off the layoff the 6-1 is great value for the last race of the weekend.

Value Plays for Today:

Race 1: Negotiator is 30-1 morning line for trainer Gary Mandella who has gone winless thus far at the meet. He has 4 thirds from 10 starts. However he is 3 for 3 second time routing like today. They tried turf in the debut race and move to dirt today. After the last race the horse put in a best of the day 48 second workout on March 1st and a nice workout last week.

Race 3: Project Leader races protected today making the first start since August at Del Mar. Trainer Marcia Stortz also owns the horse. A series of bullet workouts for the comeback race and the 15-1 morning line price intrigue me.

Race 5: Kuda Huraa is not much on paper but Umberto Rispoli decides to ride.

Race 6: Wicked Ultimatum makes the 3rd start off the layoff. If this horse is anything like the horse up North this time last year he blows these away today at a big price. This level may be too much and a drop needed but the value is great.

Race 7: Hang a Star makes the 2nd start off the layoff for trainer Ian Kruljac and Umberto Rsipoli rides for the 1st time.  Before the last race we had a best of the day workout, a race that saw the horse blast from the gate and run the opening quarter in 21 seconds going five wide.  She expectedly faded. We see another sharp workout for today’s race in which she races protected. A ground saving trip with the inside post and jockey upgrade make the 10-1 morning line very attractive.

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
