09-02-2019 Del Mar Closing Day Full Card

We have ten races for the last day of the summer meet. Next up weekend is Los Alamitos for two weeks beginning Friday before we head back to Santa Anita for the October/Breeders Cup. Thanks for reading during the meet.

UNION TRIBUNE VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:

Second Race No.5 Apples Arch (12-1)

Fourth Race No.6 Ultimate Bango (8-1)

I have two second start off the layoff value plays for today. In the second race Apples Arch has as much speed as the top choices. Trainer Doug O’Neill gives jockey Abel Cedillo the ride and they are winning 21% at the meet. It is still a tight race for the trainers title and O’Neill races this horse protected today in a sign of optimism. Apples Arch dueled early in the last race and faded deep stretch to run fifth. The winner of that race has returned and won again. 12-1 is great value in this wide open race. Both times second start off the layoff this horse ran better. In race four Ultimate Bango is a threat to steal this on the front end with many late closers in the race. The second start off the layoff has seen the best races for this horse as well, both victories.

Pick 5 I need a single is race 1 Magic At Midnight with Talamo riding for Glatt and they win 38% of the time. Top speed, hot jockey/trainer tandem recently going 2-2-0 from 7, sharp workouts and they race the horse protected here after claiming off the debut win last out. Glatt is 23% 1st off the claim.

Pick 4 I need a single is race  – none today I am value hunting

Longshots of the Day:

Race 3: Sothalis is a Prat/D’Amato horse and they are winning 27%. A sharp workout and the outside post with this jockey is great value at 6-1.

Race 6: Applecross, Gerous rides for Baltas in a tight trainers race. 1st time Lasix after a poor race at Royal Ascot in a grade 2. 1st time Euros are a must use for me and Geroux was enticed for this stakes race. 10-1 or more is nice.

Race 7: Big Time Grammy, Cedillo rides the debuter for breeder/owner Krikorian who was on a heater earlier in the meet. All his wins where on horses he owned like today. Sire is winning 38% in debut races making this a very attractive new face in a bad crowd longshot.

Race 10: Italia makes her 3rd US start for Pupye and he promptly puts Van Dyke on the mount and this tandem is 40% at the meet and when they hit its on good prices. They thought enough of this horse to race her in the G3 here last November but she hit the bench till May. She had some minor issues in what looked like merely a leg stretcher but the final time was as good as the top choices in this race. She then hit the bench for a month and was shipped to the beach where we see regular workouts since opening weekend. Van Dyke riding is a big deal and Pupye may be looking to end the Del Mar meet with a win before heading to Santa Anita where he was on fire. 15-1 or more would be a great price to end the meet for us!

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
