08-18-2019 Del Mar Full Card

What a great Pacific Classic day it was.  There were some chalks but also some nice price horse wins. Our single in the last race did us in on the Pick 4 unfortunately. Today’s card looks very chalky with some standout singles so I will be looking at trifecta keys and rolling doubles today.

If you are going to Del Mar this summer be sure to stop by and say Hi. I will be hosting the Newcomers Seminar every Friday and Sunday inside the main gate.

UNION TRIBUNE VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:

Third race No. 1, Scrappy Deville (5-1)

Scrappy Deville won last out at this distance at Los Alamitos, cruising to a very easy victory. The win was validated when the horses that finished second and third returned to also win easy at Del Mar. The horse is jumping in class today but this 5-1 value is too good to ignore.

Pick 5 I need a single is race 1 Matera a debut horse for Hollendorfer who cost $1.4 million and has huge horses in the bloodline. Mike Smith rides. Baffert also races a debuter horse in the race and although his firsters have lacked punch in the lane of late when you don’t use the Baffert it hurts the ticket. The Pick 5 ticket is cheap enough that we can go two deep.

Pick 4 I need a single is in race 6 Jetovator with Prat riding. Has blistering early speed and shortens up today for a trainer heating up recently. There is nothing else in this race. In race 8 Julius won by 11 lengths opening day for a hot trainer/jockey tandem and has put in nothing but sharp works.

Longshots of the Day:

Race 7: Prince Earl in the “other” Phil D’Amato horse making the first start since December 2018 at Del Mar. The jockey is winning 25% for this trainer and the horse is 1 for 1 at the distance. They obviously targeted this race. Even off such a long break this is a great value at 12-1.

Race 9: Pretty Point – its the last race and Mike Smith is riding, an angle we have used for nice wins this year plus Smith won  on a longshot for this trainer already at the meet.

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
