Thanks again to Frank Scatoni for letting me host the Newcomers Seminar yesterday at Del Mar – it was fun and was even better when my one longshot pick Arch of Troy won at 16-1! It’s Pacific Classic weekend and we have some nice full fields over the weekend!
This is a very, very tough card today and with a double Pick 6 carryover that is likely to give some large payoffs. I found it very hard to cut down selections to make ticket’s affordable so I have included all I think have a chance for those with larger bankrolls. The Pick 4 today has an $8k claimer in it and the last race has a Baffert plunger at 9/5 you have to use but if he is giving up on the horse how do you trust? There are a couple of very live longshots today as well!

In the Pick 5 today I need a single to get this ticket manageable so I am landing on Gosofar in race 2. 2nd over the last 3 races on the Hill he switches to dirt, off since June has been training at Del Mar including a bullet work last week
Pick 4 I need a single is in race 6 Nagys Piggy Bank HOWEVER this is an $8k claimer and these are always tough to single in. 1st time out of state starter had won 3 in a row and 4 of 5 prior to the last start which is a throwaway where he was fractious in the gate and lunged. Roman rides but this is a Hess horse whom Desormeaux is not on. I won’t be singling here but if you need one…
Longshots of the Day:
Race 3: Award It, one of my most profitable angles in recent months and here at Del Mar has been Talamo/Ellis moves. When Joe rides for daddy in law off a claim its likely live. When he does not its usually claim bait or not ready. Claimed off a win last out under Talamo for a trainer 27% claim repeat, 24% off the bench we get 6-1
Race 5: Elegant Tanner, was off slow last out here and finished 6th by only 2 lengths going 5 furlongs, 1st time route the distance may be ideal for a trainer who is 23% on turf
Race 6: He’saruler, flew in the stretch under Stevens last out to run second and now adds an extra half furlong which could be ideal
Race 7: Gutsy Ruler, from 7 starts here he has a win 4 seconds and a 3rd. This is more of an exotics angle play here over a straight up win even though he did win last out. Tribalist however is 3 for 3 at Del Mar with a crazy story – he won at Del Mar in 2014 hit the bench for a year, won in August 2015 at Del Mar, hit the bench, won at Del Mar last summer, hit the bench for a year and now races here in this stake race with the same jockey who rode all. 15-1 on those stats I am betting this all the way to Sunday!
Today’s Late Pick 4 will cost $36 with horses listed in preference.
Today’s Pick 5 will cost $40.50 with horses listed in preference
Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.
For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.
When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
