08-07-2019 Del Mar Wednesday Full Card

So far at Del Mar favorites have won 43% of all races and have been in the money 73% of the time. This is great news if you bet the chalk. As value hunters these results explain the tough beats so far at the meet. On Sunday our value play Early’s Kid was bet down to 7/2, a great value for the horse. The horse broke nicely from the gate, went to the lead and powered away in the stretch. Unfortunately, the favorite under the hand of Flavian Prat flew late and beat us on the line. Value plays will win at Del Mar, when not if! Tough card today in that it could really chalk out. I ended up leaning towards singling a number of races but…

If you are going to Del Mar this summer be sure to stop by and say Hi. I will be hosting the Newcomers Seminar every Friday and Sunday inside the main gate.

UNION TRIBUNE VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:

Third race. No. 9, He’s Like Violence (12-1)

He’s Like Violence makes his first start since this time last year here at Del Mar, a 2nd place finish at this distance. The horse races protected today in this beaten claimer race, the only protected horse here and that jumps off the page for me. They picked this spot for a reason. The trainer is 19% off extended breaks and we are getting 12-1 or more here. There is a lot of early speed in this race and this is a horse who liked to close strong last year so the race set-up suits his running style. This jockey rode the horse to a win and a second place finish last year and re-rides today.

Pick 5 I need a single is race 2 Interesting Times from trainer Yakteen who has won 2 of 3 at Del Mar. Returns to dirt where she had a win and a 2nd. We need a single to spread in other races. Has the top speed and a sharp work for this race. In race 4 Appolina has had 5 career races for Baffert and run 2nd all 5. Each race Baffert has tried to get rid of the horse and no one has claimed. They take the blinkers off today  – maybe 6th time the charm plus it gets claimed! Baffert did put in a sharp workout for this race, the sharpest the horse has had. In race 5 Toinette skipped a stakes race to run here. That could mean a prep or they want the sure paycheck win here.

Pick 4 I need a single is -none today I am price hunting

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
