08-04-2019 Del Mar Sunday Full Card

We went 3 of 4 in the Pick 4 when race nine blew up the tote board at 17 to 1. This is an extremely tough card today with no real standouts but races where spreading is needed.

If you are going to Del Mar this summer be sure to stop by and say Hi. I will be hosting the Newcomers Seminar every Friday and Sunday inside the main gate.

UNION TRIBUNE VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:

Third race. No. 6, Early’s Kid (6-1)

Early’s Kid dominated last out in Northern California at the Pleasanton racetrack winning by seven lengths and being “ridden out”,a horse racing term for the horse won easy with mild urging. That’s good! Today trainer Andy Mathis drops the horse in class for this race but does not risk it for a claim. That is another huge positive. Also adding to the appeal is that the trainer is 2 for 2 when dropping horses. Early’s Kid has the top speed in the race, the top last race speed and there is a bullet 47 second workout on July 17th here at Del Mar. The morning line price of 6-1 seems too high but that is great for us value hunters.

Pick 5 I need a single is race 4 Bam Bam Bryan who ships in off a monster win Lonestar Texas winning by 10 lengths going 7 half furlongs. Moves up in class today but risked for a claim. Shippers from here have done well over the years and the horse is also eligible for the ship and win bonus money so you know they have their eyes on that. We need a single to spread in other races today.

Pick 4 I need a single is -none today I am price hunting

Longshots of the Day:

Race 6: Grinning Tiger moves up in class off a win last out at this distance. We have a couple of sharp works since then. Gets in light with Velez but in these sprints that usually is not something I look at. 15-1 is nice. Mike Smith rides Jack Van Berg, a 20-1 longshot for East Coast trainer Puhich. Smith riding is why we are using plus the trainer is 29% 2nd start. This is a wide open race we have to spread.

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“Bíonn grásta Dé idir an dialait agus an talamh.”

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
