08-03-2019 Del Mar Saturday Full Card

We hit the Pick 5 for the 2nd day in a row and almost swept the entire card again but blanked in the last race. We have 10 very competitive races on the card today. Favorites and low payouts have been the theme this week but I believe today is going to bring some longshots home. Let’s get to work and try to sweep the weekend! In the late Pick 4 today I have a longshot as my top choice that should pay us big on the win.

UNION TRIBUNE VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:

Third race. No. 6, Sneem (8-1)

Sneem is an Irish horse making the 2nd start off a two year break for trainer John Sadler and owners Hronis Racing. The horse won the debut US race in May in Northern California and then hit the bench. After regular workouts since then they now place the horse in an allowance race protected. Sadler wins 24% when shipping, is winning 24% overall on the year and is winning 24% when the horse has Lasix for the second time like today. This is the most wide open race on the card today, a race that in my Pick 5 I am using all. Eagle Song at 10-1 is another very interesting lonsghot in here from trainer Mark Glatt. We see a sharp 47 second workout last week on the turf. Also, jockey Abel Cedillo has won all three of his races for this trainer. This is the 1st start in five months and they protect the horse today. That usually means the horse is live. Ten of the 16 times this race has been run a horse priced over 5-1 has won and that screams ‘value race’.

Pick 5 I need a single is race 5 Comical and this is based on the jockey choice. Julian Leparoux, a top East Coast jockey flies in to ride this horse. He rode Shedaresthedevil last out, the other Callaghan horse. Is undefeated in 2 career races including a Grade 3 at Saratoga July 11th. Sharp work last week. Comical has won a Graded race, the other two, while major prospects have not.

Pick 4 I need a single is – none I am longshot shopping today. Many would choose Vasilika and rightly so but….

Longshots of the Day:

Race 4: Eustace scratched out of a lower level race Friday when given the inside post and now gets the outside post here. Trainer is 28% adding blinkers for the 1st time.

Race 6: Gutsy Ruler loves Del Mar and this distance. From 8 races he is 1-5-1. 15-1 yes! While its been two years since the last race this is a drop in class today from allowance races and he is the leading purse winner in this race having won $318K so far. They are risking today so I have to think they believe there is a chance. Watch the early money action and the late money for clues on how live this horse is. Could be a Del Mar type longshot for sure!

*****Race 9: Give Me a Hint won 3 in a row last year for Hess and hit the bench. Raced in a 5 furlong turf race in June and now races here protected in what looks like an ideal distance. That race in June looks to me like it had two purposes. Get a race into the horse and not risk it on a surface and distance she never raced on. The more important objective in my eyes was to ensure a nice high price for today by doing what they did. VERY VERY sneaky longshot here. If this is the same horse as last year we have a big price chance.

Race 10: Equal Measure, is another Kent and Hess tandem play and it’s the last race  so you know we are using. When Desormeaux rides the late races the horses are live. A late double with the Hess/Kent horses.

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any difference’s let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“Bíonn grásta Dé idir an dialait agus an talamh.”

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
