07-23-2023 Del Mar Full Card

The opening 2 days of the meet have a big swing and a miss like Padres hitters this year!. The good news is big price horses are winning  – the bad news thus far is not ours! Let’s see if we can turn the tables today.

I will be the guest handicapper on Frank’s Best Bet at Del Mar today. Be sure to tune in at 11am!

My longshot/value plays are horses I believe will out run their longshot odds and even potentially win at nice prices. This can be very useful for those doing exotic bets such as trifectas, exactas and Pick 4/5/6’s.

Longshot/Value Plays of the Day:

Race 3: Shared Future – jockey/trainer combo went on a heater at Santa Anita. Wide open race like most at Del Mar 12-1 is too good a price. Freedom Lass is the “other” Phil horse.

Race 7: Giovinazzo – tough post but this horse with the top early speed needs the lead anyways so will gun on the break and try to wire at a big price.

Race 8: Raging Torent 20-1 with a string of bullet workouts for a jockey winning a lot of late.  Beat the favorite time. The 1 post on 5 furlongs on dirt is ONE for 49 in the last 5 years. Express Line sees a potent jockey/trainer combo – this may be a prep but the price is right

Race 9: Lamplighter Jack – this horse will try to steal this race on the front end and with little early speed there is a big chance this could happen! If Smith can build some distance at slower fractions the race is over. I also like Cash Equity at 8-1. Kent rides for Phil.

Race 10: Kaylas Joy – this is a very bad race and sometimes the kind of race that chaos, aka prices win! Drops in class and 1st start since November the bullet works jump out. Now they may be claim bait but for small owners and stables I tend to overlook. Hector bothers to ride and that’s a big plus for me!

Race 11: Give Me The Lute – 1st race since February for Mathis and he gets JJ to ride! This is a $25k claimer race and this horse is protected, another big sign to me. I hope, but doubt, we get even 4-1!

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outsider for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
