07-19-2018 Del Mar Full Card

Heartbreaker in the last race yesterday as we ran 3 of 4 in the Pick 4 on both the cheap and more expensive tickets. We were looking at some good pays too with both horses. Our longshot in the Pick 4 Restrainedvengence paid a very nice 11-1 on a day that saw a lot of favorites and 3rd favorites win. The payoffs reflected that and were kind of muted for an opening day. Things get interesting today however in what again looks to be a very difficult card. The dirt and turf courses were playing a little strange yesterday and that is common at Del Mar. What worked yesterday may not work the next day as they change railings, distances, and groom the dirt differently. It adds to the price returns! Hollendorfer was on fire yesterday winning 3 of 6, a marked turnaround from the last couple of years here. Del Mar is a track where streaky trainers, jockeys and owners need to be monitored!

This was one tough card to handicap today so I have tried to keep the tickets on the modest side using the only single candidates I could see. It should pay very well when we connect!

If you are at Del Mar this summer be sure to stop by the Newcomers Seminar and say hello as I will be hosting it each Sunday one hour before the first race at the main entrance.

Pick 5 I need a single is in race 2 Rak City. Best speed last race and 2nd best back speed he ran 2nd going longer racing 4 wide in the stretch. Trainer Koriner puts his main jockey on and he owns the horse too and Koriner fires with longshots a lot at the meet so when he has a favorite I look even closer.

Pick 4 I need a single is in race 7 Moonshine Memories who drops in from a disappointing G1 race last month. 2 wins from 3 starts at Del Mar you cannot be faulted for singling but this is a vulnerable favorite!

Longshots of the Day:

Race 2: Latitude, 2nd start for Dorf and he switches to the other bug boy and adds distance after weakening trying to go gate to wire July 4. We get another sharp workout and Dorf is 24% 2nd start, 24% mdn claiming

Race 3: Invested Prospect, less known jockey and trainer for a speedster who tries turf for the 1st time we get 20-1 and likely way more. We have some sharp works for this race and given the speed gate to wire will be the tactic. This is the kind of longshot that wins here! The last 3 races he was ahead at the finishing distance. This is a HARD race which is why I am spreading! Poster Girl may want longer but has the best early speed and can fly late too with Steven’s on board

Race 5: Rockaway, dominating 9 length win last out under bug boy and now Prat hops on with the class jump. I usually don’t like quick turnarounds but Prat is 3 for 5 for O’Neill and 83% in the money so sign of extreme confidence at 8-1 here

Race 6: Andesh, 1st time Irish I ALWAYS use as they are the class of racing. 1st start since April we get the 1st time Lasix turbo boast and the distance looks ideal given the earlier career races in Ireland. Trainer D’Amato also races another in here with Talamo riding and they are winning 43%, Soltero. He scratched from a tougher race yesterday

Race 8: Charmingslew, when Steven’s rides the last race even though its opening week you pay attention. When he rides for Neil French I really pay attention. Has just as good speed as horses a fraction of the odds and speed wins races

Today’s Pick 4 will cost $72 or $36 with the single with horses listed in preference.

3,5 (3 single to make ticket cost lower)

Today’s Pick 5 will cost $45 with the single with horses listed in preference

6 (5,3)

Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
