Opening Day at Del Mar is here and we have a great 10 race card today! It is going to take a few days to get a feel of how speed and late pace are playing so the early days of the meet tend to bring some nice prices. I will be hosting the Newcomers Seminar at noon today at Del Mar inside the main gate.
If you are going to Del Mar this summer be sure to stop by and say Hi. I will be hosting the Newcomers Seminar every Friday and Sunday inside the main gate.
My Del Mar Season Pass is on sale now for only $150 a 40% discount! Sale ends today!
VALUE PLAY OF THE DAY:
In race 2 Morse Code is listed as 6-1 morning line from trainer Richard Baltas. The horse ran 5th last out in the Grade 2 Whittingham going a mile and one quarter, losing to today’s favorite United, who ran 2nd. Today’s distance is 1/8th shorter and Morse Code was leading at this mark last out before being swallowed up by the pack at the line. Apprentice jockey Jorge Velez rides today and that extra seven pound weight break will help a lot down the stretch. Dropping in class today we also have a sharp workout. 6-1 is a tremendous value for us.
Pick 5 I need a single is in race 1 Julius from red hot trainer O’Neill with Bejarano riding. Won last out at this distance and the race prior was beaten on the line. Rising in class today the horse is protected in a sign of optimism. Highest last race speed, top early speed, top back speed the tactic will be simple – gate to wire winner
Pick 4 I need a single is in race 8 Jasikan with Prat riding for Sadler who is winning 26% on the year. Won last out going from 6th into the turn to power home 5-wide and win. If you need a single to make your Pick 4 cheaper this is it but….
Longshots of the Day:
Race 5: Honeyfromthesouth, Baffert tried this distance and turf for the 1st time last out in June and the horse won its first race. Moving up in class Baffert is 38%, jockey Garcia wins 27% for this trainer and we get a couple of very sharp works. Its turf so we are getting a great 6-1 morning line price on this Baffert in a wide open race.
Race 8:Nolde looks very interesting at a price coming in off 2 straight wins. This horse will be flying late just like the favorite except we are getting 8-1 or more. 2 for 2 at the distance.
Race 9: Metropol is another Baffert with Talamo riding and he is winning 54% and 85% in the money. 5-1 is a great price and a must use in all exotics bets.1st start since a debut win last October we have some sharp workouts.
Today’s Race 7 Late Pick 4 will cost $48 with horses listed in preference.
Today’s Race 1 Early Pick 5 will cost $48 with horses listed in preference

Race 5: 7,4,10,9,13,5
Race 6: 5,3 (9)
Race 7: 1,4,6,5
Race 8: 3,4,10 (2)
Race 9: 4,3,1,9

Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.
For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.
When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
