03-08-2020 Santa Anita Full Card

We had 5 horses in the 1st leg of the Late Pick 4 on Saturday but alas 3 of the 5 surged late to run 2nd, 3rd and 4th. It would have been a big payday for us. We then hit the 50 cent late Pick 3 that paid $151 so you can imagine what our Pick 4 would have paid with those price horses!! We will have a big day today when Rispoli gets his way before flying off to Italy tonight.

Pick 5 single is in race 3 Papa Turf with Cedillo riding for Miller and they are 27%. Claimed last out at this level after running 2nd Miller is 27% 1st off the claim etc etc. Miller places them to win and we get a free spot on the card. The favorite wins this race 32% and is priced under 5-1 a big 76%,

Pick 4 single is race 6 Media Blitz with Rispoli riding for Callaghan for the 1st time. This is a Kaleem Shah horse making the 2nd start off the layoff. Last out the horse bobbled at the start  then rushed up 4 wide before settling and running second by a half length. The horse battled in the stretch and would have won if not for a late runner. The grit shown is hard to train. The race prior the horse was given another horrendous ride.  This is a major jockey upgrade today for a horse that loves to pass horses late if given the chance. Top speed in the race, top class in the race and trainer Callaghan is 23% 2nd off the bench. This is my top low odds play of the day.

L.A. Times Value Play of the Day

Race 8: Coast of Roan was a big winner for us last time when Umberto Rispoli rode for the second time and perfectly timed the late run for the win. Rispoli stays here instead of riding for trainer Eric Kruljac who also owns Lincoln City. Umberto wins for Kruljac so staying here means he thinks this horse has a better chance.  He is winning 60% for trainer Doug O’Neill and 80% in the money. When Umberto rides for O’Neill the horse is live. We are getting 8-1 value today on the morning line although I am thinking it likely goes much lower. If rain takes this race off turf it should be no issue as well. Use Lincoln City as well with Smith riding the last race of the day at 15-1.

Value Plays for Today:

Race 1: Heywoods Beach makes the 1st start since December for trainer John Sadler and Hronis racing and Joel Rosario gets the mount. 1st time Rosario is a potent win rate for Sadler and we see some nice workouts for the comeback race.

Race 2: Fellow Citizen won last out for Miller with Cedillo riding but Cedillo picks the favorite over this horse. A negative? Not in my eyes as Cedillo rides for Gatt but he is 1 for 21 making that a beatable favorite and this horse moving up a class a great value play. The horse led gate to wire last out and today get’s Maldonado. He is 1 for 1 for Miller, 3rd off the layoff Miller is 25%, he is 23% in sprints, 30% at the meet and simply on fire. 6-1 is great! I usually do not like 1 week turnarounds but the horse is racing protected so if Miller thinks do it, we bet it!

Race 7: Paige Anne is a Callaghan/Rispoli double. The horse has won 2 in a row and moves up in class today making the 1st start since late January. Callaghan is 50% all-weather to dirt, 24% winner last race and a great 8-1 value. The favorite in here can be beat. In fact this is a bet all, look for price race!

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
