02-16-2020 Santa Anita Full Card

We won another modest Pick 4 on Saturday that gives us some ammo for today’s great 8 race card. There are some loaded fields that are sure to pay some great prices so I am spending a little more on today’s tickets. We also have racing tomorrow.

L.A. Times Value Play of the Day

Race 5: Johnny Podres is the 2nd entry from trainer Steve Miyadi.  The horse won last out in a dominating closing drive at Golden Gate at a mile, the first career win. He passed horses and blew the field away late. We call these “lightbulb” races and it is an angle I like to look at especially from a value perspective. Since that last race we see nothing but bullet workouts. We are getting an 8-1 morning line for a trainer who is 28% maiden winner last race and 25% shipping. Miyadi has this race tied up with this value play and the favorite Fly the Sky who dominated here at Santa Anita last month.

Value Plays for Today:

Race 1: Bella D picks up red hot Rispoli after a disappointing debut in the same race as the favorite Bella Vita. Early trouble and a closed lane late was no help last out. 20-1 is too great a value to pass up with this jockey as a backup to the favorite. Bella should out run her odds.

Race 2: Captain N. Barron picks up Maldonado so the strategy is simple – gate to wire. Maldonado is 1 for 1 for this trainer who is 25% at the meet from 8 horses. He is 33% 1st start.

Race 3: Too Much Smoke makes the 2nd start on turd for trainer Peter Miller who is a lethal 30% win rate on the move. Umberto Rispoli gets the ride and he is 1 for 2 for Miller. Racing protected today there was a solid workout last week. Dam has 3 turf winners from 4 starters. 12-1 morning line is a great value.

Race 6: Jen Go Unchained won last out in a race that saw the 2nd place horse win the next race. The distance is the question mark. 2nd start off the layoff and 1st start with small trainer Becerra we see a best of 88 work last week. Claim bait? Perhaps but too good a value to ignore in this wide open, spread deep race.

Typos happen and I do my best not to make them. Always read through my writeups to make sure the posted numbers are correct. I list Pick 4, Pick 5 selections and also a listing of all plays for each race. If there are any differences, please let me know.

*Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.

For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice  with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.

When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.

“The grace of God is found between the saddle and the ground.”
