We were 3 out of 4 and beat on the line in the final race of the Pick 4 yesterday even though it looked like we had that race in the stretch. Bejarano and Prat won 4 and 3 races each to start off what could be a great jockey race this season. They each did it on some price horses as well which is more impressive. Del Mar is a track where you pay attention to hot jockeys and trainers so every horse they ride in the coming days needs extra scrutiny. Day 2 of the Summer meet brings us an 8 race card which means the Pick 5 and Pick 4 overlap. It is going to take a few days to see how the dirt and turf courses play out, whether speed is playing or closers have the upper hand. On dirt yesterday early speed was playing out with the horses in the top two winning races except of course the last one where we got bobbed on the line!
For those of you new to my selections let me give you the quick tour. I like to keep my tickets on the low end with a mix of live long shots and favorites. For the Pick 4 I like to keep the bet around $40 and this gives us 3 horse coverage in each race. For the Pick 5 $54 or less is what I am aiming for which gives us excellent coverage with a chance for some big pays. Horses are listed in preference so if you have a smaller bankroll you can remove horses.
Get my Full Meet Card including the Pacific Classic for one low price opening week! Del Mar is where the big prices usually hit and where our biggest wins have come!
Pick 4 I need a single is Willows Babe in race 8 who ran second in her debut last month and was well bet. Bejarano re-rides for Baltas and they are 25% and Baltas moves her up in class, a move he is 21% with. They looks like they want to be paid the winners check on the likely claim.
None today – longshot
Longshots of the Day:
Race 1: Oh Newman, Prat rides for Diodoro who is 28% claiming, 25% 1st off the claim, 21% for the year and 27% in sprints – dude knows how to win and check the bullet workouts into this race
Race 3: Halo Ahead, Talamo rides through the claim for a trainer he is 44% for going 4 of 9 and trainer is red hot going 3 of 4 in the last month. Did Joe tell his trainer something? Check that best of the day work on July 2nd as well and we get 10-1 and running protected today as well!
Race 5: Woody’s Folly loves this track going 2-1 from 4 starts, 2nd start off an eight month break we get 12-1 with the same jockey who rode here last summer, regular works since April have to think the plan was for Del Mar. In this same race Awesome Return is a fresh claim by Ellis and Talamo rides which means we pay attention, sharp works gearing up for Del Mar and when Talamo rides for Daddy-in-law they mean business!
Race 6: Adriot, scratched from yesterday to race today was 12-1 morning line for Wednesday and today 6-1? Desormeaux/Truman are 2 of 4 on price horses, sharp work for this race from a trainer who has a poor debut win percentage of 6% but it is Del Mar and Mommy has 5 winners from 6 horses
Race 7: Snow Cloud, off the bench after 3 months won both starts last summer at this distance here for us once at a huge price and ran 3rd in December and has a 2-0-1 record from 4 starts, has speed and can close
Race 8: Swanky Jas, Team Desormeaux cannot be ignored at Del Mar even though Keith has a poor debuter record, there is a sharp work last week for this race and that’s not typical for this trainer, daddy wins 17% debut and this race is won by horses over 5- 1 a whopping 51%
Today’s Late Pick 4 will cost $36 with horses listed in preference.
Today’s Pick 5 will cost $54 with horses listed in preference
Horses listed in brackets are for added coverage if wanted and for exotics.
For races where I only have one or two selections I usually like to KEY the top choice with the second choice and an outside for trifectas.
When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
