Tough day yesterday as we started the Winter Meet on multiple 3 of 4 tickets after our top choice in the second leg was beaten on the line. It was great to see the largest crowd since the 1990’s at Santa Anita yesterday! Today’s sequence is not an easy one so I am going to keep it relatively small.
For my free best bets and Pick 5’s head on over to my website.
The sequence today beings in race 6, a 6 half furlong sprint on dirt. The favorite is #6 Tiz Jolie for trainer Spawr who is 4 of 8 going sprint to route to sprint like today and is dropping with a sharp work in the bag. Jolie likes the minor awards however and it will all depend on where he is after the first turn, in the lead we have a chance, if not then it wont be today. #1 Market Notes is ridden by Bejarano again who amazingly had no winners on yesterday’s card (which means he could make some noise today!) Notes likes to close and will hopefully have some fast pace to run at in the stretch from our other choice. I always bet on #3 Alpine Luck but when Kent does not ride a horse he brother sends out it is very hard to land on it. He does add blinkers.
The second leg betting says this is a two horse race between #1 Wolf Man Rocket and #3 Logan’s Moon. I give the edge to #3 who does have a case of secondistis but Bejarano rides again and this is the second start of a 5 month layoff. Victor rides #1 for Baffert who is coming off a 7 month break after a 5th in a Grade 2. Sharp works but its not like Baffert has been lighting it up on the circuit these days. Baffert races two in here, the other being #4 Dream Team with Garcia riding but he ran 6th on Dec 6th at Los Al. As they say you either do both Bafferts or none of them. #6 Horse Laugh loves to nibble at the minor rewards but Prat hops on today and those downhill races in the Spring meet where good enough to beat these and he is dropping with a sharp workout. Rosario rides for Dorf on #7 Gangnam Guy who is winning 25% turf to dirt and he has a win at this distance at Del Mar.
Race 8 brings us a Grade 3 going 1 1/8 on turf. The favorite is #12 Glory with Smith riding. Rising in class with a two win streak since switching to turf she is also adding another 1/16th. She led gate to wire last out and from post 12 will have to gun from the gate here. I prefer Smith horses like this that force him on the lead versus sitting back 10 miles and surging to miss on the line! #7 Stormy Lucy just gets no credit. She won the G1 at Del Mar last month at 65-1 and has won two G2’s here last year. She can win from both the front or from deep and that makes her dangerous today at a price.
The final leg is another 6 half furlong on dirt, this time a maiden special weight. O’Neill/Gutierrez and Reddam team up on #1 Etailer who ran third in his debut. He was leading into the stretch that day. To make things tough O’Neill sends out firster #5 Lost Dutchman with Gonzalez in the saddle and a sharp workout. Bejarano rides #10 Demonslayer who finish 4th of 4 in the same debut race as Etailer. Bet to 8/5 that day despite the poor showing we have to use.
Today’s Late Pick 4 will cost $27 with horses listed in preference.
Live longshot is #11 Downtown C.T in race #5. Two sharp workouts in a row similar to the last race where he won at 1mile at Del Mar last month. He led gate to wire that day and the cut back today can only help. 12-1 morning line on the Hillside course we are all over that!
Pick 5 will cost $24
When I have three horses selected in a Pick 4 or Pick 5 consider them for Trifecta boxes and for superfecta boxes use the 3 selections with the highest priced horse with good form or top tier jockeys riding, especially if they give a price. Rolling Pick 3 and doubles using selections.
