Yesterday I decided ice cold Dorf could beat me and he finally did, winning a race but I am ok with it. We had some key scratches from my selections as well. The Pick 4 chalked out with a $35 payoff so even if we had used Dorf we would still have a slight loss. This harkens back to my strategy of keeping Pick 4 tickets I do under $40 and lower. While its nice to win, winning with a loss sucks! It’s Gold Cup day on the second to last day of racing this season.
I will continue to post my picks for Los Al and Del Mar on my website once the Santa Anita meet is over so be sure to stop on by!
The Pick 4 begins in race 7 today and all eyes are on #5 Masochistic. He has won his last two and put in a fast workout last week. Not a crazy single but #2 San Onofre, a front runner who may try to steal this race is running. 4 wins, 4 seconds he is always right there.
In race 8 the #8 Queen of the Sand gets a major jockey upgrade to Bejarano. She will be towards the back of the pack running into speed in the stretch but Bejarano is unlikely to have her miles back and today’s race this fillie has speed to run at. #1 Blingismything is a horse I like. Baze rides and she will be battling it out with #7 Franticola in the stretch. Franticola has been plain unlucky in her last two starts losing to Queen of the Sand in April. She cuts back in distance today and that may be the key. I’m using three here but this is a wide open race with 7/2 being the shortest price.
#9 Catch a Flight with the potent Stevens and Mandella tandem stands out. He won a G3 and a G2 in May and is going to be tough in this race. If you are uneasy singling here then #6 Hoppertunity from Baffert/Garcia is a consideration 2nd start off a layoff and under Garcia again as is #2 Hard Aces from Sadler/Espinoza who are hot in recent days.
It is fitting we end today’s racing on the Hillside course! The shortest morning line price is 7/2 for a first time starter on the Hillside no less! That horse is #6 Where Was Eddie who has turf breeding and a fast workout last week. Tough to trust a debut on the Hillside however. If you believe in Machochistic and Catch a Flight as singles this is an ALL race to consider. Horses 5-1 or more win this race 45% of the time with the favorite winning 43%. Favorite or bomb! #5 He Could was strong in the stretch in the Hillside in his debut and that could help today with better positioning. #7 Stormin Trick with Baze has been gelded since his slow start on the Hillside last out. He stumbled at the start and that was it.
Today’s Best Bet is in race 7, the number 5 Machochistic and #9 Catch a Flight in the big race. Too bad we can’t do doubles like they have in Europe! As a bonus in race #3 the favorite has a win rate of 90% from 20 races, one of the highest I have seen over a large sample size – that favorite today is #9 Divine Tale.
Today’s Pick 4 singling Machochistic and Catch a Flight will cost $18
Spreading will cost $27
