So close yet so far yesterday. I had 4 of 5 in the Pick 5 and 3 out of 4 in the Pick 4. Going into the final leg I had 3 horses with the odds on favorite from ice cold Hess paying $412 and my other horses paying $900. Alas we got no run for our money. Today’s sequence gives us a free spot in race 8 with Beholder. I also have some free exotics bet ideas at www.californiapick4.com

The first leg today is an $8k claiming race where anything can and does happen. We have some suspicious drops with a couple dropping after being claimed for higher in the last races. #9 Coolington is 2 for 3 with Talamo riding and we get a great 7/2 price. The favorite, #7 My Slew was claimed for $16k two back, ran protected last out running second but drops for his new connections to $8k today. Mistake claim and hoping for their money back? I still have to use but. #6 Frensham drops big for ice cold Hess and Desormeaux does not ride. I need to see Hess win a few before I use his horses so if he beats me he beats me. #5 Relentless Heat is always in the mix and may finally get the win so I will use him.

The favorite in race 7 is the #7 Labour who ran second here last month off an eight month rest. Prat rides. Bejarano rides #8 Brave Act who is 2 of 3. Bejarano and Prat have been dominating turf races this season. Although Brave is rising in class trainer Eddie Truman is 7 of 12 on the Hill this year. We get a very good price I think on #2 Incline Village who posted a fast workout last week and won last out.

Usually in a big race I will try to beat the favorite but not today. #4 Beholder is 9 of 10 at Santa Anita and looked great winning in April. Off sick for a month which may concern some she has been working well so all systems go. Now if you are looking for insurance in here Baltas and Bejarano hook up on #6 Wild in the Saddle. Back to dirt after running poorly on turf, at 8-1 if the top choice falters (unlikely) she makes for good insurance.

Back to the Hillside for the last race and #7 Big Move jumps out at me. A fast workout last week after finishing a close second on the Hill last out, she is the deserving favorite in here. The horse she lost to won next out. Not a crazy single even though we are on the Hillside. #2 Dixie Tweet shortens up today with Baze in the saddle.

Ok, so here is my thinking. I really like Beholder and I really like Big Move. I could single both and look for more coverage in the other legs so on one ticket lets try that angle.

My Pick 4 ticket starting in race #6 will cost $45

My Best Bet scratched yesterday and based on the outcome O’Neill chose the wrong horse to scratch! Today I am looking at #7 Hugh Knew in the 3rd race on the Hill. His trainer has won 4 straight on the Hill and 7 of 12 since December. An exacta box with #1 Salsita who won big at this level on the Hill last time she raced it.

Sunday late p4 racing was like La. Tracks. Long shots in the 7th and 8th races that on paper didn’t fit. I doubt it but maybe a bit of hanky parky in the 8 th race for p6 carry overs. Bejarno on a favorite I have learned is NEVER A SOLO on exotics bets. He has cost me plenty. My ticket was 1 & 11/all/8/2369

    • Sorry man! It wasnt bejarano – it was ICE ICE cold Hollendorfer, I reluctantly used him today but for the next couple weeks will let him beat me till he gets his horses back on form. Bejaranao + Jerry = ice!
