BOOM goes the dynamite as both our Pick 4 bets won! The payoff was a decent $337 for the $10 and $15 bet but the fun part was actually winning on the 3rd choice single in the hillside course in race 7. The hillside nemesis has been vanquished! Let’s see what spoils we can snag in today’s $500,000 guaranteed Pick 4!
Miller enters two very interesting horses in the first leg today, #1 St Joe Bay and #7 Calculator who has not run in almost four months. Who is the fox and who is the rabbit? St Joe won by a huge margin in October and could go for a gate to wire win given her speed. Calculator is moving DOWN in class, and as I said yesterday, Santa Anita is playing favorite to droppers now. Usually when you see a trainer with two live potentials in a race it behooves you to use both! #8 Hero Ten All won his last race and was second behind Dortmund in his first race – need I say more? #6 PapaCoolPapaCool is another than could upset at a price. I am not going to use the second choice Rockinatten simply because I want to see a race and always give preference to California runners.
In the 7th race we see the hillside course again and the horse that jumps out at me is the #1 Anytime Anyplace with Talamo on board. Anytime I see Joe up on a turf horse close to being top choice I pay attention. #3 Battle of Evermore with Desormeaux on board placed second on the hillside back in October. Aside from these there are a few that could upset so this is the hillside race where pressing ALL could be a strategy and take the chance on two singles in other legs.
In the 8th race we have a quandary. Do we single the #2 Hoppertunity from the simply ice cold Baffert/Garcia tandem or do we add in an insurance horse? The #1 looks very interesting even though its an Irish invader from back east. Quadrivium is two for two on dirt since racing in Ireland. Mike Smith jumps on board and he previously rode Hoppertunity. The Irish horses have not performed well in the last year here in Southern California except recently when they have ridden on dirt.
The hillside course is one where any horse can win. Today Santa Anita ends the $500k Pick 4 with the hillside and we have a dropper that looks very interesting, the # 8 Snowday with Van Dyke on board. A Hollendorfer that has run decent in his last two he DROPS which in my book, given the Santa Anita bias to droppers so far, is a big plus. #5 Royal F J is another dropper who, when he wins, he pays big and paying big is what the hillside course does! #1 Compari has 10 starts with 6 wins and 1 second and 2 thirds on turf. The hillside roulette wheel is where a horse like this can make it to the winners circle!
Today’s Pick 4 bet will cost $18
An alternative bet that will cost $16.50
Good luck today!
